Visitors to Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth now have a new metal swing set to enjoy near the cul-de-sac in the Ship Cove area parking lot.
A subcontractor for the equipment supplier Obrien & Sons Inc. of Massachusetts installed the structure in late August. It replaces 35- to 40-year-old swing sets that were deemed unsafe by the facilities manager Greg Marles in December 2014 following a safety inspection requested by Public Works Director Bob Malley.
The new set is also located further away from the parking area than the previous structure.
“It would be my recommendation that the swing sets be removed from service and discarded as they pose a safety risk by not meeting the U.S. Consumer Playground Safety Guidelines,” Marles wrote in a December 2014 email to Malley.
Last week the Public Works department completed additional site work such as loaming, seeding, watering and applying erosion control matting around the perimeter of the swing set.
The $17,000 project was paid for with funds from the Fort Williams capital budget, which is funded by revenues generated at the park. The Town Council approved the expenditure in May.
