The renovated Aikens Annex at Windham Town Offices on Gray Road opened to the public this week.
Last Thursday and Friday, town employees moved furniture, filing cabinets and computers to the new annex office space where tax collection, town clerk and the town manager’s office are now settling in.
During the past six months, River Road Common LLC remodeled the old 1950s annex to make space for these offices, once housed in the adjoining Town Office main building.
The construction company, headed by Windham resident Ed Woodbury, replaced windows, tore down walls, leveled off the floor, put in a new drop ceiling and lighting, and installed new plumping, heat, electricity and security.
With the project now complete, the entrance to the annex is now the main entrance to both the annex and the old Windham Town Office building. Inside, a stairwell and handicapped lift allows access to the offices in the main building.
In the new annex lobby, service windows, like one might see in a bank, allow residents to file for licenses, pay taxes and apply for passports without having to wait in long lines that once wound down the third-floor stairs on busy days in the main town office building.
Office space in the main building is also scheduled for renovation, though not to the extent of the annex revamp, said Town Manager Anthony Plante. With the relocation of the town offices, other offices, such as code enforcement, will expand in the future to make use of vacant space in the main building.
