Honorary members

President Elaine Spiller presided at the annual meeting of the Westbrook Woman’s Club held in May at Verrillo’s Restaurant in Portland.

Three women were honored as new, honorary members. They were Constance Kimball, a member since 1959 and a past president; Nancy Kelson, a member since 1960 and chairwoman of the committee that organized the first Westbrook Together Days; and Marcia Willock, a member since 1978 and also a past president. The trio was presented certificates and flowers.

Other members who attended were Roberta Morrill, Judith Reidman, Jean Thomas, Ethelyn Chase, Betty Young, Mary Libby, Evelyn Meserve, Lee Bernard, Lois Pratt, Frances Fogg, Carol Quint, Joan Labrecque, Carolyn Leavitt, Beverly Libby, Anita Blackstone, Doris Doggett, Marjorie Eames, Barbara Libby, Nancy Curran, Mary Gagnon, Nancy Wescott, Maryanne Usher, Ruth Joy, Lucille Waite, Germaine Grant, Joyce Reynolds, Mary Peters, Christine Bennett, Vicki Doughty, Judy Getchell, Ruth Lowell, Georgette Flaherty, Janis Usher, Mary Barton, Nancy Plaisted and Margaret Robie.

Five public safety promotions

Four Westbrook fighters will soon become lieutenants and a Westbrook police officer has been promoted to sergeant.

Westbrook Fire Chief Gary Littlefield said the four are Mark Theriault, Chris Shepard, James Rogers and Donald Trafford. Littlefield said they are assigned to Station 3 on Route 302.

Capt. Tom Roth of Westbrook police said Pat Lally will be promoted to sergeant from the detective ranks and will work the nightshift. The five promotions become effective on July 1.

Concerts in the park

A series of free summer concerts 6-8 p.m. on Wednesdays in Riverbank Park will begin on July 11 and run through Aug. 29.

The dates and bands are July 11, Westbrook City Band; July 18, Carolyn Currie; July 25, to be announced; Aug. 1, Wavelength; Aug. 8, Common Ground; Aug. 15, Bob Charest Band; Aug. 22 Flashback; and Aug. 19, Tony Boffa.

Hilton honored

Education Commissioner Susan A. Gendron and the chair of the state’s truancy advisory committee recently recognized Colleen Hilton of the Westbrook School Committee among 10 people for their significant contributions to meeting the needs of children and at-risk youth in their schools and communities.

Hilton serves as chairwoman of the Westbrook School Committee, and the Alternative Learning Steering Committee which is a diverse board of professionals who help on financial issues, school committee support, community relations and the general direction of Westbrook’s K-12 Alternative Learning system. Hilton’s vision and support led to a K-12 Alternative Learning system that serves over 300 students per year.

In her six years as a school committee member, she has consistently supported at-risk youth at the policy level. Hilton is a graduate of Westbrook High School, a graduate of the University of Maine, CEO of the Visiting Nurses Association and vice president of Home Health Care at Mercy Hospital. She is married with three children in college.

Truancy, Dropout and Alternative Education Advisory Committee recipients are chosen for their impact on young people whose lives might have turned out quite differently if not for their caring and intervention. The award recipients have worked to create caring respectful and safe learning environments for students while supporting them academically to attain Maine’s Learning Results standards.

Duncanson on dean’s list

Arthur Duncanson was recently named to the dean’s list for the second semester at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine.

Duncanson, a member of the class of 2009, is a graduate of Westbrook High School. He is majoring in small vessel operations.

On Husson dean’s list

Angele D. York, the daughter of Gary and Roxanna York of Westbrook, was named to the dean’s list at Husson College. A graduate of Westbrook High School, she is a junior paralegal studies major.
