Police said a 69-year-old pedestrian was hospitalized in an accident involving a car while trying to cross the street in Gorham Village at noon Friday.

Sgt. Bob Mailman of Gorham Police Department identified the pedestrian as George Weimer and the driver of the car as Wilma Smith, 77. Both live in Gorham.

Officer Bob Henckel said Weimer, whose glasses fell in the street, was walking with assistance after the incident but taken to a hospital by Gorham rescue.

“He has cuts and bruises,” Henckel said. “Considering he was taking on a car, he’s in pretty good shape.”

Police said Weimer went over the car hood and landed in the road in front of the car while trying to cross South Street from the Gorham House of Pizza and heading towards Amato’s. Smith was making a left turn from Main Street onto South Street. According to police, Smith said Weimer ran out of the shadows.

Mailman said the incident blocked traffic at the busy intersection of routes 25 and 114 during the noontime traffic.
