Yarmouth 2
Lake Region 0
Despite a yeoman’s effort in goal from Chelsea Meyers, who stopped 17 shots, the Lake Region girls soccer team came up on the short end of a 2-0 score Tuesday night at Yarmouth. The Clippers got their two goals from two different players to earn the win.
Early on it was apparent that Yarmouth would be on the attack for most of the game. They spent the majority of the early minutes deep in Laker territory. Sam Pelletier and Devin Fitzgerald were solid in front of the goal and cleared away a number of good chances for the Clippers early.
“Sam as a senior has stepped back there from being more of a forward all these years,” said Lakers head coach Lynne Harrison. “She has done a nice job. Devin does a great job marking strikers. She is always there on the ball.”
Just under 10 minutes into the game, the Clippers finally got on the board. Lizzy Fischman sent a pass across to Danielle Torres, who was right in front of the net. Torres fired toward the goal. Meyers got her hands on it, but the ball deflected into the net and Yarmouth was up 1-0.
Armed with a lead, the Clippers kept the pressure on. Over the final 30 minutes of the first half they unleashed six more shots at Meyers. But she was up to the task and turned away every single one.
“Chelsea Meyers in the goal again is one of the most outstanding goalies you’ll find,” Harrison said. “She’s a cornerstone for us.”
The Lakers had one good chance in the first half to draw even with the Clippers. With 26 minutes to go, the Lakers got behind the Yarmouth defense and managed to get an open pass across the front of the goal. But no one was there to put a shot on the net.
The Clippers came out with guns blazing in the second half and fired several shots at Meyers. Early in the half, they had two shots sail just over the top of the goal. Meyers recorded another four saves in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
The Clippers got an insurance goal with 22:30 left to play when Tess Beem scored. Her shot was right at Meyers, who deflected the ball to her right. Unfortunately for the Lakers, the ball managed to trickle across the goal line for a 2-0 Yarmouth lead.
Yarmouth recorded another seven shots over the next 22 minutes but couldn’t get anything else past Meyers.
“I think our defense has tightened up,” Harrison said. “I think the kids played together really well and I think they are pleased with their performance. We don’t like to lose but from the games we have had, we have tightened up and are getting ready to move forward.”
The loss drops Lake Region’s record to 0-3-1. The Lakers know what they need to work on as they have yet to put the ball in the net this season.
“We just need to worry about getting our offense going,” said Harrison. “We have our defense pretty set. We still have some problems but we need to generate some more offense and get some goals.”
The Lakers are scheduled to face North Yarmouth Academy on Friday.
