A Cape Elizabeth police captain is on paid administrative leave following his arrest for operating under the influence in Gorham.
Capt. Brent Sinclair, a 23-year veteran with the Cape Elizabeth Police Department, was arrested just after 10:30 p.m. Oct. 4 after his 2008 Ford pick-up truck collided with a 2004 Honda CRV at the intersection of Main and South streets (routes 25 and 114) in Gorham, according to a police report.
Gorham medics treated at the scene the driver of the Honda, 53-year-old Susan Jensen, for minor injuries and released her, according to the report.
Sinclair was released on personal recognizance bail that night, according to the report.
The Cape Elizabeth Police Department placed Sinclair on paid administrative leave on Oct. 6, said Town Manager Mike McGovern. Neither he nor Police Chief Neil Williams would confirm that Sinclair’s leave was because of the OUI arrest.
“He is on leave in reference to an internal investigation that we are conducting,” Williams said.
Williams said Sinclair would be on leave for as long as the investigation lasts, but did not give a timeline.
Gorham police referred all questions about the accident to Chief Ron Shepard and Lt. Christopher Sanborn. Both were attending training classes in Cape Elizabeth this week and unavailable for comment.
Sinclair joined the force in 1985 and served three years as the department’s detective before the department promoted him to sergeant in 1991, according to the Cape Police Web site. Sinclair has an undergraduate degree in criminology and a master’s degree in business. He is married with three children.
The Cumberland County District Attorney’s office did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
