High school alumni plan banquet

The Samuel D. Hanson High School Alumni will hold its annual banquet on Saturday, June 10, at Salmon Falls Restaurant in Hollis.

Patricia Bean, an alumni banquet committee member, said the class of 1956 will be special guests.

SAD 6 plans school budget hearings

Kathy Campbell, a spokesperson for MSAD 6, has announced the district’s schedule for public hearings and informational meetings about the proposed school budget.

The locations, times and dates are:

Buxton, 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, at Buxton Town Hall; Frye Island, 11 a.m., Saturday, May 27, Frye Island Community Center; Hollis, 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, Hollis Community Building; Limington, 6 p.m., Thursday, May 18, Limington Municipal Center; and Standish, 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 16, Standish Municipal Building.

Tour historic Buxton

Buxton Recreation Department is sponsoring a bus tour of the town’s historic sites at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, beginning at the old Buxton Town Hall in Buxton Center.

The three-hour tour includes a light lunch. The cost is $15, $5 for ages 12 and under.

BEHS most improved students

The Bonny Eagle High School honor flag was raised for the students who have earned the distinction of being Sea Dogs Most Improved Students for 2005-2006.

These students are chosen by the faculty and are given tickets to a Sea Dogs game at Hadlock Field. The event is sponsored by the

team and the students received tickets to attend a game on Sunday, April 30.

The students honored by the Sea Dogs are Eric Bourassa, Shaun Brogan, Nick DeRoche, Richard Grindrod, Josh Harlow, Robert Malone, Marce Marocchini, Nick Porter, Nikki Sewall, Amanda Shepard, Samantha Townsend and Andrew Wheeler.

Bonny Eagle students National History Day winners

The honor flags were raised at Bonny Eagle High School and at Bonny Eagle Middle School for students who were winners at the Maine National History Day.

In the middle school division, Eric Trumble finished in first place for his historical paper on “The Struggle for the Protection of Free Speech: Taking a Stand Against Book Banning and Burning.” Lauren Gowell and Mariel VanAtta finished in first place for their group exhibit on “Samantha Smith: Taking a Stand for Peace.”

In the high school division, James Hanley finished in first place for his historical paper on “Stephen Biko: Taking a Stand Against Apartheid in South Africa.” Stacy Sullivan finished in second place for her historical paper on “From Creationism to Evolution: John T. Scopes Takes a Stand Against the Status Quo.” Luke Boucher and Casey McKague finished in first place for their group exhibit on “Defiance in Leaps and Bounds: Jesse Owens and the 1936 Berlin Olympics.” Kalie Stevens and Jessica Pratt finished in second place for their group exhibit on “Kent State: Students Take a Stand Against War.”

The high school students also won the overall team state championship. Those students will travel to national competition at the University of Maryland in June.
