Seated in the foreground, Ethel Verrill, resident of Highland Cliff Road in Windham for most of her life, celebrated her 105th birthday on Tuesday at Ledgewood Manor in North Windham. Surrounded by fellow members of the Lakes Region Red Hot Flashers, Verrill enjoyed birthday cake and songs provided by the ladies. She was also given an honorary membership into the club. Verrill has five children, 16 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren. Asked what her secret to longevity was, the spry Verrill, who is also the holder of Windham’s Boston Post Cane as the town’s oldest resident, responded, “I don’t do anything special. It just happened that way.” Staff photos by John Balentine
