Two games in two nights turned into two losses for the Windham High girls basketball team last week. The Eagles (2-9) dropped a 49-35 decision to McAuley on Thursday, Jan. 10, and one night later, they let a late-game lead slip away in a 38-36 loss at Kennebunk.

The setback in Kennebunk was especially frustrating for the Eagles because they had a 32-23 lead going into the fourth quarter. But not enough offense at one end of the floor and a hot-shooting Kennebunk squad at the other handed Windham another setback.

The Eagles played well in the early going thanks to four points from Amber Allen and three straight baskets from Kelsey McGowan, Jenna Wiley and Helen Libby. Kennebunk had taken a 7-4 lead before those consecutive scores to end the period.

Windham led 18-15 at the half and it could have been more had the Eagles not missed six free throws during the quarter and a pair of layups near the end of the quarter.

Kennebunk opened the second half by tying the game on a three-pointer from Brooke Kravetz, but the Eagles responded with a three-pointer from Kelsey Babb and another three from Kelly Dubay. A couple baskets by McGowan and another score from Babb catapulted Windham to a 32-23 lead with eight minutes to play.

Kravetz got Kennebunk going in the final period with two three-pointers to get the Rams closer. A field goal from McGowan was followed by two more Kennebunk baskets and the game was suddenly tied at 34-34 with 2:25 to play.

Kennebunk took the lead at the 1:30 mark on a basket from Hannah Bennett and the Rams’ defense only allowed Windham a pair of free throws from McGowan the rest of the way.

McGowan led the Eagles with 10 points. Babb contributed seven and Allen added six.

Against McAuley, the Eagles trailed 17-16 at the half before the Lions took over after the break, outscoring Windham 32-19.

Babb led all scorers with 13 points followed by Willey with nine, Helen Libby with five and Allen with four.

Windham is back in action on Friday when they travel to Portland.
