For the first time since 2005, a team other than Scarborough High School is the Class A girls outdoor track champion.
On Saturday, the Red Storm’s bid for a fourth consecutive outdoor track championship was derailed by Edward Little High School, which beat the second place Storm 136-98 for the team championship.
The Scarborough boys finished third overall at the meet, which was held Saturday at Thornton Academy, with 65 points. The Bonny Eagle Scots claimed the title with 77 points, with Edward Little second with 68.33.
Rounding out the rest of the top 10 for the girls were: Bangor (51), Mt. Ararat (42), Brunswick (38), Thornton Academy (35), Biddeford (34), Massabesic (32), Cheverus (30) and Brewer (29.50).
On the boys side, Scarborough was followed by Cheverus (53), Thornton Academy (48.33), Portland (38), Lewiston (32), Gorham (30), Bangor (27) and Westbrook (26.33). South Portland was 11th with 15 points.
While they came up short in their bid for a fourth straight team title, the Scarborough girls did take home an individual championship in the first event of the meet. The 4×800 relay team of Meghan Summerson, Molly O’Connor, Abby Chick and Whitney Chamberlain won the race in solid fashion, with their time of 9:41.24 over three seconds behind the team from Edward Little.
The Storm girls also won the 4×400 relay title, setting a state record in the process. Rachelle Greene, Nicole Kirk, Chamberlain and Chick’s time of 4:00.9 easily broke the 16-year-old mark of 4:03.6, set by Bangor High School in 1983.
While those were the only two individual championships the Storm won at the meet, they came close in several other events. Greene was a close second in the 100-meter dash, with her time of 12.86 coming in just behind Kristin Slotnick, who finished in 12.78. Greene also finished second to Slotnick in the 200-meter dash in another close race, with Slotnick’s time of 26.64 just beating out Greene’s 26.89.
The 4×100 relay team of Jenny Snyder, Andrea Tolman, Kirk and Greene were also involved in an exciting final. Just over four-tenths of a second separated the top three teams in the race, with Edward Little winning in a state record-time of 50.41. Thornton Academy was second in 50.68 and Scarborough was a close third in 50.78.
Chamberlain was second overall in the 800-meter run in 2:19.29, just behind Abbey Leonardi, who finished in 2:16.92. Chick came in third in the 400-meter dash in 59.24.
The Storm’s Emilia Scheemaker had good performances in the jumping events, coming in third in the triple jump with a top distance of 34-6.75 and fourth in the long jump with a distance of 16-8.
Scarborough’s Christy Manning had two second-place finishes in the throwing events. She finished second in the javelin with a top throw of 114-2, with teammate Haela Booth-Howe coming in fourth with a top throw of 110-5. Manning also finished second in the discus with a top throw of 120.4 and she was fourth in the shot put with a top throw of 34-1.5.
On the boys side, Scarborough’s Sam Chick was second in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing in 40.63. Chick also finished second to Bonny Eagle’s Jamie Ruginski in the triple jump with a top distance of 42-11.75.
The Storm’s Nate Hathaway finished a narrow second in the 1,600-meter run, with his time of 4:26.34 just behind Luke Fontaine of Cony, who finished in 4:24.73. Teammate Craig Robinson was third in the 3,200 meter run, his time of 9:39.65 was just six-tenths of a second behind Will Geoghegan of Brunswick.
The Scarborough 4×800 relay team of Tom Pogar, Nick Morris, Robinson and Tom Hague finished fourth overall in 8:24.83 and the 4×400 relay team of Conor Sullivan, Morris, Hathaway and Chick finished third in 3:31.55.
Brian Woodbury picked up points for the Red Storm in the shot put, finishing fourth with a top throw of 50-01 and Eddie Manning also picked up a point in the discus, coming in seventh with a throw of 128-8.
For South Portland, David Hardison was the top finisher at the meet. He came in third in a close 300-meter hurdle race with his time of 40.77 just beaten out by Chick. Hardison also finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles, just behind teammate Tony Haeuser, who finished in 15.61.
The Riots’ Tom Redstone was fourth in the 1,600-meter race walk, finishing in 8:20.63, Ryan Skillings finished eighth overall in the shot put with a top throw of 43-7 and Sean Feely was 10th overall in the 400-meter dash in 53.33.
