I would like to join the rest of our community in welcoming home Marine Lance Corporal Tom Lawler and I would like to thank your newspaper for the front page coverage of his homecoming.
Welcome home Marine.
But I would also like to ask that in the future your newspaper make one small, but important, change when writing stories about Marines. We are Marines, and prefer to be called Marines, not soldiers. Certainly, in the technical sense, Marines are soldiers. But once an individual has successfully completed Marine Corps boot camp that individual has earned the right to be called “Marine.” It is a title that cannot be taken away, it is a title that lasts a lifetime and it is a title that is proudly worn by every individual who has ever earned the right to use it, from the rawest boot camp graduate to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. We are all, quite simply, Marines.
Semper Fi.
