Scarborough 72
Massabesic 53
The Scarborough girls’ basketball team had everything going right on Thursday night against Massabesic. They played tight defense and shot accurately from all over the court. That translated into a big 72-53 win for the Red Storm. Massabesic’s Georgia Boisse led all scorers with 22 points. Reegan Brackett paced the Red Storm with 15 points.
Early on, the Mustangs looked strong, coming out of the gate and scoring the game’s first six points. But the Storm got rolling and closed the gap in a hurry. They pulled within a single point midway through the first when Sarah Bonenfant scored on a jumper. After another Mustang turnover, Bonenfant found herself with the ball again. She was fouled and sent to the line. Her first free throw was good to tie the game. Her second gave Scarborough a lead they would never lose.
“I thought we came out well and all of a sudden we turned the ball over too many times,” said Massabesic coach Andy Soldati. “We didn’t look up for our passes. The turnovers killed us. We can’t do that against good teams. We can’t turn the ball over. When you do, that’s what happens.”
Following the lead change, the Red Storm finished the first quarter on a 10-3 run to take a 19-11 lead. Colpitts led the run with seven of her 14 points coming after her team claimed the lead.
The second quarter belonged to Scarborough. In the first seconds of the second quarter, the two teams exchanged a few baskets. But things got out of hand quickly when the Storm ripped off 10 straight points. Most of those came from Brackett.
The Scarborough run was interrupted briefly by a Mustang free throw from Brittany Benton for one of her 13 points. At halftime, the Red Storm held a commanding 45-19 lead. They outscored Massabesic 26-8 in the second quarter and looked unstoppable.
The Mustangs looked stronger in the second half. In the third quarter Massabesic outscored Scarborough 22-13 to inch closer. Boisse had 13 of her 22 points in the third as the Mustangs tried to mount a comeback.
“We take pride in working hard like that,” Soldati said. “I preach ‘one basket at a time’ and we cut it down to 14 or something like that. I thought we had some chances here and there but we gave up some easy layups and that hurt us.”
Early in the fourth, the Mustangs cut the lead down to 14 points. Scarborough made sure they would get no closer. The Red Storm kept the Mustangs at bay with a 14-12 fourth quarter to cruise to the win.
“We missed some easy lay-ups in the first quarter and long passes that we should have scored on,” Soldati said. “I don’t think we do a good job right now of ball faking. We need to do a better job of that and not lobbing the ball but making a nice hard bounce pass. I try to preach bounce passes because it gets there better and the girls have a harder time to reach down to block it, it’s just fundamentals.”
The Red Storm are scheduled to take on Biddeford on Saturday. That same day, the Mustangs will face Westbrook.
