Damian wins ATV

Damian Thorne,10, won an Arctic Cat all terrain vehicle by purchasing a $1 fundraiser card for a December drawing for Muscular Dystrophy.

There were 10 Big Apple stores in Maine that participated in the fundraiser with10 ATVs awarded. There were 39,000 entries and only 10 winners.

A representative contacted the family at home on Wednesday, Dec. 14, and left a message for Damian to call but by the time they retrieved the message, the store had closed. Damian’s mom, Joy Malier, thought he might have won an ATV but told him not to tell anyone until they confirmed it.

She called the Big Apple the next day and sure enough, he was a winner. They arranged to pick up the ATV at the Big Apple in Westbrook for the following week. “I then immediately called Damian at Canal School to let him know that he won. I spoke with the secretary to see if she could have him come to the phone and when I told him he said ‘yes, I won,'” his mom said.

The secretary then told Damian to step out side to release his excitement for five minutes where he “screamed and jumped up and down” before returning to class. “When the day came, I picked Damian up at school and went to Big Apple to claim his prize and boy was he excited. His dad met us there with his truck so we could bring it home,” Damian’s mom said.

His grandparents, John and Jean Malier and Sid Thorne attended as well as his uncle, Sid Thorne. “This was one of the most exciting days that Damian has experienced,” Damian’s mom said.

A trip back in time

A dozen residents of Presumpscot Commons recently visited the Westbrook Historical Society to view the collection in the society’s museum at 17B Dunn St.

Diane Dyer, a society hostess and one of the visitors, Theresa McLaughlin, are cousins through their common Turgeon heritage. They enjoyed looking at family photos in some of the society’s wedding albums, which Dyer compiled from scrapbooks donated to the society.
