Post 197 to elect board

Westbrook Memorial Post 197 of the American Legion will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the post home, 300 Conant St. (Route 25).

Dave Martin, post commander, encouraged all members to attend. “We will elect five members to the executive board at this meeting,” Martin said. “Those interested in running for these positions must be present to be nominated.”

Martin said anyone interested in becoming a member of the American Legion is invited to attend the meeting and meet with the adjutant, Nancy Dacar, She can answer questions for prospective new members and explain the benefits of membership.

Those interested in becoming members should take a copy of their discharge papers (DD-214) with them.

Take a friend to church

The Universalist Church of Westbrook, 719 Main St., will have a “Bring a Friend to Church” service at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17.

Brian James, “The Guru,” will minister.

The church will sponsor a car wash on Saturday, Sept. 23.

Seniors to meet, travel

The Westbrook Senior Citizens will hold their first meeting of the fall at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 18, at Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St.

Singer Brad Harnois will entertain following the business meeting.

The group is planning a two-day trip on Sunday and Monday, Sept. 24 and 25, 5o Beacon, N.H., for a lobster fest.

MBDA band show

The Westbrook Music Boosters will be hosting the first show of the MBDA marching band season at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Westbrook High School football field.

Six bands are expected to compete. The boosters said it’s a great opportunity to see area marching bands compete and to support the Westbrook Marching Band. Concessions will be sold

Admission is $5; $3, students and senior citizens.

Garden club to hear O’Donal

Jeff O’Donal will speak when the Prides Corner Garden Club meets at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Mitchells’ at 159 Pride St.

O”Donal, of O’Donal’s Nursery, will talk about planting fall bulbs, preparing perennials for winter and forcing spring bulbs.

New members are welcome to attend.

Shakespeare auditions

The Acorn Shakespeare Ensemble will hold auditions at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 25, at the company’s new studios in the Dana Warp Mill, 90 Bridge St., Westbrook, for those interested in working with the group in the coming season.

Those auditioning are asked to prepare a short, 10-15-line monologue from Shakespeare. Actors should be prepared to work on the material with members of the company.

The ensemble is a group of professional actors under the direction of Michael Levine aand Michael Howard, who seek to re-introduce the power of Shakespeare’s imagery to the members of the community.

Boyd named to business post

Jack C. Boyd III has been named business development manager of Munters Moisture Control Services, a division of Munters AB, a publicly owned company based in Stockholm, Sweden.

Boyd, who will be in Munters’ office in Memphis, Tenn., will direct market positioning data research, national marketing and new business development.

Boyd is a native of Westbrook. He has 32 years’ experience in commercial and residential disaster restoration, including 25 years with the Memphis-based ServiceMaster. Boyd held several positions for ServiceMaster including vice president of insurance restoration.

Children’s cancer program walk

After celebrating one milestone last year by surpassing the $1 million mark in funds raised through the Annual Maine Children’s Cancer Program’s Walk since 1986, the annual walk will celebrate another one this year.

The 20th Annual Walk will take place at Payson Park in Portland and at seven other locations in central and southern Maine All walks begin at 9 a.m. Pre-registration for all of the walks begins at 8 a.m.

A 5K run/walk will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30, in Gorham that will also benefit the program.

“Rarely can such an event make an immediate impact but the MCCP Walk is one such event. Every dollar raised by walkers will go directly to help MCCP treat and provide services to Maine children with cancer and their families,” said Jim Bouchard, development director at MCCP.
