WRVC students excel in state championships
Westbrook Regional Vocational Center sent 21students to the annual Skills Leadership & Skills Conference recently held in Bangor.
The students had an opportunity to compete in a wide range of skills championships as well as a various leadership activities and the team earned a silver and two bronze medals.
Medalists in the 2013 skills state championships were
Roger Beesley with a bronze medal in architectural drafting; Ciarra McCrillis, bronze medal, early childhood education; and Kathryn Berry, silver medal, health occupational professional portfolio.
Team members in the skills championships included Chris Bailey, Cameron Hewins and Nick Moulton in electrical construction wiring; Ryan Corcoran, and Brandon Ruel, fire fighting; Ross Torelli, technical drafting; April Cummings, Molly Dorn, Bailey Drouin, and Cynthia Reed in health knowledge bowl; Whitney Phillips, job skill demo A; and Josh McCormick, carpentry.
Historians to hear new Deering book author
Historian and author William David Barry will speak when Westbrook Historical Society meets at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, in the society meeting room at the Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.
Barry will speak on his latest book, “Deering: A Social and Architectural History.” Deering became a town when it separated from Westbrook in 1871 and it is now a neighborhood in the City of Portland.
The public is welcome and admission is free. Barry will also have copies of his book for sale.
Annual woman’s club meeting
Westbrook Woman’s Club will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday, April 9, at Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St.
A catered roast turkey dinner will be served at 11:30 a.m. Reservations and payment must be made by Monday, April 1. For more information, call Betty Young at 797-0659.
The annual meeting will follow the meal. Committee chairwomen are reminded to tale annual reports.
Seniors roll
out schedule
Westbrook Seniors Citizens will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, April 1, in the community center, 426 Bridge St. A singing group, the Five LeFevres, will entertain.
Seniors are planning several trips. On Tuesday, June 11, the group will travel to Danvers, Mass., to see The Drifters. Then, its on to the Arundel Playhouse on Tuesday, June 18, for a tribute to the Andrews Sisters by the Andrews Brothers.
Also at the Arundel Playhouse, the seniors will see “All Shook Up,” a tribute to Elvis on Tuesday, Aug. 6. In December, seniors go to Indian head in Lincoln, N.H.
No prices for trips have been confirmed yet. Seniors from surrounding communities are welcome to attend activities and trips.

Michaud earns insurance designation
Andrew Michaud of Union Street in Westbrook has earned the Chartered Life Underwriter professional designation. Michaud is an account executive at Turner Barker Insurance in Portland. He focuses on advising business owners, families and individuals in the areas of life insurance planning, wealth accumulation, estate planning, education funding, charitable giving, retirement planning and employee benefits.

Leymah Gbower, the 2011 Nobel Peace Price winner, spoke at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center on March 20. Gbowee is a peace and women’s right advocate from Libya, who trained as a social worker and founded the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa and co-founded the Women Peace and Security Network Africa.
