It was very disappointing last week to discover that the National Republican Governors Association from Washington, D.C., aired an advertisement in Maine. But even more disturbing was the outright lies the ad is spreading about the Maine economy. Here in Westbrook, with the expansion of IDEXX, we know that Maine’s economy is growing, and that it’s a great place to do business and raise a family.

The ad suggests that our state has a massive, $733 million budget gap, despite the fact that the Maine Constitution requires a balanced budget. Unlike George W. Bush, we can’t spend more taxpayer money than the state takes in. Though we certainly struggled with the challenge the “structural gap” presented, under the governor’s leadership we closed the deficit and achieved a surplus. We have even been able to put away $100 million in the state’s rainy day fund.

It is disappointing that the Woodcock campaign would stand by while Washington Republicans attempt to play dirty tricks on Maine people. But I am confident Maine people won’t buy it.

I sure won’t.
