The Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough High girls swim teams battled for second and third place at Monday’s Class A state championship meet at Bowdoin College in Brunswick. Both squads chased the eventual winners from Bangor as best they could, but in the end, the Rams had too much depth and too many good swims to get knocked off by either the Capers or the Red Storm.

This was Bangor’s second straight state title – Scarborough had won in 2005 and Cape’s girls won titles from 2002 through 2004. The Rams scored 352 points to finish ahead of second-place Cape Elizabeth (291) and third-place Scarborough (250). South Portland finished 11th with 72 points.

The Capers had two individual state champions with Nora Daly winning both the 200 freestyle (1:57.83) and the 500 free (5:17.15) and Rosie Wennberg taking first in the 100 free (56.19).

Cape also had two state championship relay teams. The foursome of Rosie Wennberg, Alexandra Ciraldo, Lilly Wennberg, and Nora Daly took the title in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:44.24. And the same group of swimmers combined for another state title in the 400 free relay (3:48.13).

Cape Elizabeth also had a number of other fine swims that earned valuable points during the meet.

Rosie Wennberg was the runner-up in the 50 free; Alexandra Ciraldo placed fourth in the 50 free and third in the 100 free; Lilly Wennberg finished second in the 100 free and she took fourth in the 200 free; and Emma Logan finished sixth in the 500 free and eighth in the 200 free.

Scarborough also had an individual state champion with Nicole Harmon winning both the 100 butterfly (58.81) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.13) state titles. And the Red Storm won the state championship in the 200 medley relay (1:57.61) thanks to Nicole Harmon, Brittanie Bradley, Christine Beecher and Allison Rogers.

The Red Storm also earned points from a number of swimmers including Christine Beecher (fourth in the 200 IM and fourth in the 500 free), Allison Rogers (sixth in the 100 free), Hannah Flewelling (seventh in the 500 free), Sarah Reynolds (third in the 100 backstroke), and Brittanie Bradley (sixth in the 100 breaststroke).

Scarborough picked up more points with a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay and a third-place time in the 400 free relay.

South Portland diver Curry Girr finished second with a score of 275.90 in the 1-meter diving competition.
