Church classes resume

Sister Jackie Moreau has announced education classes at St. Anne Catholic Church will resume this fall.

The classes will begin with a joint parent/child session for elementary grades, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10. Classes will meet every Sunday after the 8 a.m. Mass, followed by coffee and doughnuts.

Pre-school and kindergarten children will meet during the 8 a.m. Mass Coordinator Stephanie Heatley will meet with parents after class in the hall for a few minutes.

Middle school youth and parents are invited to meet with coordinator Diane Richard in church at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17, to learn about plans for this year.

SPRED, the church’s faith-sharing program for special needs children, will meet from 10-11:15 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, for a five-week series. Each child will have a faith friend who models behavior expected. “We begin with activities to help us quiet down and focus. Later we move to the chapel for our scripture lesson. Last, we return to our meeting room for snacks,” Moreau said.

Helpers are needed. Those interested should call the church office weekdays at 839-4857.

A 12-week adult Bible study on Luke’s Gospel will begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4., facilitated by Moreau, Catechetical leader. To register call the church office.

Persons interested in learning more about the Catholic faith can attend inquiry sessions from 7-8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10. Call Ervin Kimball at 892-9437 to be met at the church.

High school youth will begin with a lock-in retreat on Sept 16 and 17. Youth are invited to join Bishop Richard Malone on Sept. 9 to climb Bradbury Mountain, with a prayer service at the top. Those attending are advised to take a bag lunch.

Sappi golf tournament

The annual Sappi Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Gorham Country Club.

A shotgun start will be at 8 a.m. sharp.

The cost is $33; non-members, $55. It includes green fees, cart and barbeque. Cliff Wescott said the tournament would be a scramble format and have four-person teams.

Schmidt earned degree

Ian E. Schmidt was awarded a bachelor of science degree in May at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.

Barrow on dean’s list

Stephanie l. Barrow was named to the dean’s list as a junior for the spring semester at Western New England College in Springfield, Mass.

Barrow is majoring in management studies.

Woman’s club to meet

The Gorham Woman’s Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Fellowship Hall of the First Parish Church in Gorham to start its 2006-07 year.

There will be a potluck luncheon for friends and prospective members. Meg Gartley of Gorham will give a talk on Pilates. She is a certified classical instructor.

The purpose of the Gorham Woman’s Club is to bring together women of all ages, interests and experiences who are interested in community betterment.

Enrollment in the club is open to anyone wishing to become an active volunteer, and guests are always welcome to all meetings.

“Taxing Maine” to play at White Rock Grange

A play, “Taxing Maine,” on a statewide tour, will be in Gorham at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, at White Rock Grange on Wilson Road.

Sponsored by Maine Humanities Council, the event is free. The play takes a look at the history of taxes in Maine through stories and the eyes of historical characters.
