Political signs should be gone
Maine law (Title 23 MRSA, §1913-A) requires that political campaign signs located on public rights of way be removed no later than one week after the election.
It has been almost two months since voting day. Most of the campaign signs were removed within a few days of the election, but some of them stuck around for weeks, and some are still lingering today.
Maine law also prohibits campaign signs from being placed on interstate highways and on interstate highway on-ramps/off-ramps.
During my travels on Christmas Day, I saw “No on 1” signs still firmly planted in many areas of southern Maine, including interstate highway ramps where such signs are strictly prohibited. It is my hope that the “No on 1” campaign (and all other campaigns whose signs are lingering) will follow the law and remove their signs. Better late than never.

Remembering Rodney Quinn
I recently read of the passing of Rodney Quinn and his wife and was saddened by the news.
I did not have the privilege of knowing Mr. Quinn personally but I had a great deal of respect and admiration for him and thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward to “Quinn’s Corner” each week. It was evident from reading his column that he was a man of unusual integrity and intelligence. I considered his view of the world to be “spot on,” plus his column was highly entertaining due to his dry sense of humor, imagination and courage to say what needed to be said without mincing words. Talk about a “breath of fresh air!”
His instructions (as reported in the Nov. 1 story) to Mr. Danton to “not embarrass himself or him” says so much about his character and the caliber of the person we have lost. It is especially sad when one considers that it is a concern no longer held by many our public officials who regularly appear to have no qualms about embarrassing their loved ones, their colleagues and themselves.
Thank you for the comprehensive article paying tribute to him; it was most informative and deserved.
