Class of ’64 celebrates 50th

The Westbrook High School Class of 1964 held its 50th class reunion on Aug. 15 and 16.

The committee of Michael and Deborah Mazerall, Ken Randall, Madelyn Richio St. Clair, and Paul Jensen planned a festive weekend for their classmates. The weekend began on Friday, Aug. 15, when 26 classmates were given a 90 minute guided tour of Westbrook High School by Superintendent of Schools Marc Gousse. “Many things have changed but many still remain the same,” the committee said.

Organizers said the tour group left the school with a new appreciation of the direction of education at their high school and for all of Westbrook’s schools under Gousse’s leadership.

On Aug. 16, the celebration continued at the Falmouth Country Club. Ninety-four classmates and spouses gathered to reunite with old friends and teammates to reminisce about the past and catch up. The evening consisted of dinner, a brief program and dancing with music provided by Dick Raymond Enterprises of Gorham. Moore Photography of Westbrook was on hand to take couples photos as well as a group photo of the class.

The master of ceremonies, Paul Jensen, introduced individual classmates who made special presentations. Sandra Mekenna Merrill raffled her hand-made “Blue Blazes” quilt and donated the proceeds to the class. Linda Scribner wrote and read a poem that reflected how lives had been impacted during the 50 years since graduation.

Ken Randall created a memorial honoring classmates who had passed away. Charlie Thomas donated one of his award-winning pieces of art to the class, created in honor of classmate Army Staff Sgt. Benedict Davan, who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1969.

During the reunion the class voted to donate a granite bench to the high school. Madelyn St. Clair was instrumental in procuring funding for the bench, which will be placed with others in the outdoor commons area.
