Pierce Atwood LLP, a Portland-based law firm, is looking for requests from community groups who want Pierce Atwood attorneys and staff to do community service work in July.

Community-based organizations, such as public or private non-profits, school districts, government entities and faith-based organizations are encouraged to submit proposals by May 20.

“If organizations have dream projects they can’t get done by their staff or regular volunteers, then we want to help. Although we don’t wield hammers or paintbrushes on a daily basis, we are prepared to do just that, really just about anything other than legal work,” said Bruce Coggeshall of Cape Elizabeth, managing partner at the firm.

With about 200 attorneys and staff, the scope of the work that can be accomplished during one day in late July is considerable. Last year, 50 of the law firm’s volunteers spent one day at Camp Ketcha in Scarborough painting, clearing brush and constructing tent platforms.

For Rippleffect, 65 volunteers planted an organic garden on Cow Island in Casco Bay, cleared out a waterfront area and created a new trail to the shoreline. And 40 volunteers spent one day with residents and staff at Long Creek Youth Development Center building a fitness track, painting a mural and participating in organized games with the young residents.

Available dates for community service are July 21, 22, 26, 27, or 28, 2005. The selection of the projects for 2005 will take place in early June.

“The winning projects are those that allow our sizeable groups to make valuable contributions during a single day, while requiring collaborative, team-building efforts. Pierce Atwood wants the work to have lasting impact on organizations and the community at-large,” says Coggeshall.
