Cape Elizabeth 56

Erskine Academy 43

The Cape Elizabeth boys’ basketball team picked up a decisive 56-43 win over Erskine Academy in the Greely High preseason invitational Friday. The Capers took advantage of a second half run to pull away from the Eagles and pick up the win.

The game was close in the first quarter with the two teams trading baskets back and forth. But a Cape three-pointer was the difference after eight minutes with the Capers up 13-10.

The second quarter was more of the same with Erskine pulling back to within a single point early in the quarter. But the Capers went on an 8-2 run midway through the quarter to open up their biggest lead of the game at seven points. However, Erskine pulled back to within six points just before halftime to make the score 26-20 in favor of the Capers.

It looked like things would stay close right through to the end of the game when the second half began. Cape quickly scored four straight points followed by the Eagles answering back with six points in a row.

Back to within four points, the Eagles began a full court pressure defense. The Capers exploited it to the tune of an 11-3 run to finish out the third quarter and take a commanding 41-29 lead into the game’s final eight minutes.

The fourth quarter began much the way the third had ended with the Capers going on an 11-2 run and taking a 21 point lead, 52-31. But Erskine then went on a run of their own midway through the fourth and scored 12 straight points to crawl back within nine. But they would get no closer as the Capers scored the game’s final four points to win it by 13.

With the preseason games now in the books, the Capers look ahead to their season opener on Friday night when they head to Fryeburg Academy to take on the Raiders at 7 p.m.
