A Standish man was arrested Thursday around noon after leading police on a high-speed chase that ended when the man crashed his vehicle on Route 35.
According to Cumberland County sheriff’s Lt. Don Goulet, Windham police received a report of a male in the Goodwill parking lot off Route 302 masturbating. While they responded, the vehicle, which was registered to Andrew Chapman, 24, of 16 Deerfield Circle in Standish, was seen by a deputy about to enter Route 302. An attempt to stop the vehicle was made. The driver, however, fled at a high rate of speed entering the McDonald’s parking lot and driving through the Walmart parking lot. According to Goulet, the deputy did not chase due to Chapman’s reckless driving and the amount of other vehicles and pedestrians in the area.
Another deputy responded to the area and saw Chapman’s red 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier on the Route 35 at the Windham-Standish line. Goulet said Chapman passed a vehicle on the right forcing the vehicle into the deputy’s lane. Chapman also went off the right side of the road and when he maneuvered back onto the road at a high rate of speed, he was in the deputy’s lane. The deputy avoided the collision and turned on Chapman and attempted to overtake him. Chapman then lost control of his vehicle and rolled the vehicle on a corner. The deputy arrived as Chapman tried to flee on foot. Chapman was captured and taken to Cumberland County Jail on $2,000 cash bail.
Standish Fire/Rescue assisted Chapman, who had minor scrapes. The vehicle he was driving was totaled.
Chapman was charged with Class C reckless conduct with a weapon (vehicle), Class C eluding a police officer, Class E operating under suspension and indecent conduct.
