Win or lose, high school sports teams always create memories for participants, parents and fans. The 2007 Gray-New Gloucester fall sports season did just that with the usual share of exciting wins and disappointing losses.

Football

It was a long year for the Gray-New Gloucester football team. The Patriots were unable to get going and they struggled through the regular season with eight losses in eight games played. But a win at Poland in their season finale took away some of the disappointment as the young squad looks forward to more improvement and more success in 2008.

Golf

The Patriots’ golf team had a successful season. They finished at 7-3 in regular season play and qualified for the Class A state championship with a group of underclassmen that will return for more of the same next year. Gray finished ninth at the state tourney with Ben Farynaz and Orrin Googins leading the Patriots’ scorers.

Tyler Rollins and Googins played in the Class A schoolboy championship with Rollins finishing 26th and Googins 28th.

Boys soccer

The Gray-New Gloucester boys soccer team went 3-11 this season with wins coming against Poland, Fryeburg and Wells. The Patriots played competitive soccer against each of their Western Maine Conference foes.

Girls soccer

The girls soccer team finished with a 2-10-2 record in Western Maine Conference play. A couple of ties down the stretch against two very good teams (Lake Region and north Yarmouth Academy) helped the Patriots end the season in a positive manner.

Field hockey

The Patriots’ field hockey team defeated a very good Wells team in week two of the regular season and then never got it going again offensively, resulting in a 1-13 season. The Patriots lost several close one-goal games to playoff-bound teams like Cape Elizabeth and Lake Region. They played well defensively, but they were unable to generate enough offense to turn some of those close losses into wins.

Cross country

The girls cross country team took 11th at the Western Maine Class B regional meet. Junior Amanda Cormier was the Patriots top runner at that event.

The boys cross country team placed 12th at the West B regional championship meet with senior Cameron Betts leading the way with his 11th place finish. Betts went on to place 19th at the Class B state championship meet.
