Historical society meets, greets
The Durham Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 6:30 p.m., at the Union Church/Old Town Hall. Anyone interested in attending is welcome.
There will be an Open Day for the public at the Union Church/Old Town Hall on Sunday, Aug. 16, from 1-3 p.m. There is no charge.
Pay taxes online
The town of Durham, through a partnership with Androscoggin Bank, now offers taxpayers the opportunity to pay their property taxes online from home, work, or any other convenient location, using e-checks, credit or debit cards.
E-checks/ACH (Automated Clearing House)/Checking Account – Residents will need to provide their account number and the bank’s routing number to pay by this method. A check image is available during the payment process to assist in locating this information. There will be a $1 processing fee assessed.
Credit/debit cards: The town accepts Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards. There will be a 2.95 percent processing fee assessed per transaction with a minimum charge of $1.95 for credit cards. All Visa debit card transactions are $3.95. A card image is available during the payment process to assist in locating card information. To use this service go to the Durham website and click on Pay Taxes (at top of page in quick links) or under Online Services click Pay Real Estate Taxes. The resident’s account number from the tax bill will be needed.
‘Survival Challenge’ coming soon
On Aug. 22-24, Bob Crowley, winner of the reality TV show “Survivor: Gabon,” will host the Durham Warriors Survival Challenge at Maine Forest Yurts, 430 Auburn Pownal Road, Durham. Twenty-one contestants will compete during three days and nights in challenges and tribal councils, where an eventual winner will be named on Sunday. The contestants are some of the biggest “Survivor” fans in the country and include contestants from Maine. Also in attendance will be former “Survivor” participants Richard Hatch, the first winner; Sandra Diaz-Twine, a two-time winner; Terry Deitz of “Survivor: Panama”; and James Tarantino of “Survivor Nicaragua.”
The public is invited to watch the event. Money raised from the challenge goes to the Durham Warriors Project, a nonprofit that allows disabled veterans and other nonprofit groups to stay for free at Maine Forest Yurts. For more information, see www.durhamwarriorschallenge.com.
Beans on menu at Masonic lodge
The Masonic Lodge, Route 136 across from the Durham River Park, is hosting a public bean supper on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 4:30-6 p.m. On the menu are baked beans, chop suey, hot dogs, potato salad, cole slaw, bread, pickles and homemade pies. The prices are $7.50 for adults, $3 for children 5-12 and free for children under 5. For more information, call John, 751-0037.
Club schedules safety classes
The Durham Rod & Gun Club, 59 Pound Road, is holding safety classes this summer at the clubhouse. To register for the classes, write to Maineguide04071@gmail.com or call 655-7681. Homework is required to pass, as well as a written test. Classes include
hunter safety: Aug. 12, 6-9 p.m. and finishing Aug. 24, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Rent Eureka Center
The Durham Eureka Community Center is available for rent. The maximum amount of people the hall holds for an event is 50. Contact Nancy Decker at 751-1323 or the Town Office at 353-2561.
Cribbage, couponing
The Durham Eureka Community Center, corner of Route 9 and Route 136, hosts cribbage every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-noon.
Couponing for the Community meets at the Community Center every other Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. It is a chance to learn couponing basics including where/how to find and collect coupons; how to organize them; and how to begin using them. Pat Provost heads this project with the hopes that some of the skills acquired will be used to give back to the community by helping families in need.
Food pantry
The Lisbon Area Christian Outreach (LACO) food pantry, which serves the towns of Durham, Bowdoin, and Lisbon Falls, is open Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m.-noon and Saturday from 8-10 a.m. The LACO Food Pantry is located at the Marion T. Morse School on School Street, Lisbon Falls. The parking lot is behind the Lisbon United Methodist Church, off Berry Avenue. There is also a free clothing bank.
