No other team has been able to beat the Scarborough High softball team so far this season. And on Monday, for the third time this season, a Scarborough opponent wasn’t even able to get a hit, let alone score a run.

Scarborough pitcher Kelsey Griffin tossed a no-hitter as the Red Storm scored a 4-0 win over visiting Kennebunk. Griffin and Caitlin LeBorgne combined for a no-hitter earlier in the year and LeBorgne tossed a no-hitter on her own in the second week of the season.

Heather Carrier had two of Scarborough’s seven hits and she knocked in one of the Storm’s runs with a double.

Scarborough is still perched at No. 1 in the most recent West A Heal Point standings. Their closest pursuers, Biddeford and Deering have each lost one game. Deering’s loss was courtesy of Biddeford and Biddeford’s loss was courtesy of Scarborough.

Scarborough takes on Deering in Portland on Thursday, May 24, in a game that was postponed from last week.

Red Riots also keep winning

South Portland is sitting a No. 4 in this week’s West A Heal Point standings. The Riots are on a nine-game winning streak and they now sport a 9-2 record. They topped a very good Bonny Eagle team on Monday taking a 3-2 decision at home.

Stephanie Thibeault, Beth Harmon and Kayla Ferrara all knocked in runs to pace the Riots offense. South Portland starter Julie DiMatteo allowed just five hits for the complete-game victory.

Cape fighting for a high tourney seed

Cape Elizabeth’s softball team is in the midst of a very busy week. The Capers hosted Freeport on Tuesday and then Falmouth on Wednesday. They travel to Wells on Friday before finishing up the regular season at York and at Traip Academy next week.

Cape has an 8-3 record and they are at No. 2 in the most recent West B Heal Point standings. They are just ahead of No. 3 Lake Region, a team they lost to by a 2-1 score last Thursday.

SMAA tourney at Scarborough

Scarborough will host next week’s Southwestern Maine Activities Association softball tournament. The top four teams in the league will meet on Friday, June 1. The No. 1 seed will play the No. 4 team in one semifinal and the No. 2 seed will take on the No. 3 seed in another semifinal at 4 p.m. The semifinal winners will battle for the league championship at 7 p.m.

This will be Scarborough’s fourth straight appearance in the SMAA league playoff. They knocked off Biddeford in last year’s final.
