There was still no sign Monday morning of a dog that took off from a home on Baker Road in Freeport late last Friday afternoon.

Popeye, a 2-year-old mini Australian Shepherd owned by a couple who had just married in North Haven, is shy and skittish, owners Ashley Perkins and Roderick Salguero say. Following their wedding ceremony, the couple, along with their dog, headed back to the Freeport home of Perkins’ sister, Whitney Hayre, to spend the night. The dog escaped when someone opened a door to walk outside, Hayre said.

The newlyweds returned to their home in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Monday, and Perkins was sobbing as she spoke on the phone.

“We just got married and we’d get rid of everything we got as presents to get him back,” Perkins said. “He’s just a terrified dog. We got him when he was 4 months, and we think he was abused. We’re hoping he’s hungry and desperate enough to go to someone’s house to get food.”

Hayre said Monday that Maine State Police spotted the dog on I-295 at around 5 p.m. Friday, half an hour after he went missing. Motorcyclists chased him back into the woods on the western side of the highway, Hayre said.

“We spotted him one time on Baker Road after that, at around 5:30, and we haven’t seen him since,” Hayre said. “He’s such a sweet dog but he’s shy around people. We’re afraid that he’s hiding somewhere. He’s just a little dog so he can move quickly. We’re afraid that he could be five or six miles away.”

Anyone with information on the missing dog can call Perkins at 240-888-5487.
