Maine police and sheriff’s departments will share in over $100,000 in federal grants this summer to conduct additional drunk driving enforcement throughout the state. The Maine Department of Public Safety said the 54 departments will use the money to fund officer’s overtime for OUI enforcement until the end of September. The funding is being administered by the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety. Public Safety Commissioner Michael P. Cantara said, “Summer is when alcohol and driving is at its peak and this funding will be an added resource for police to remove the impaired driver from the road.” A similar grant last summer resulted in 275 drivers being arrested for drunk driving. Cantara said the $105,045 will be used for additional OUI patrols and roadblocks. The departments awarded the OUI funding include:
Scarborough PD – $2,435.00
South Portland PD – $2,500.00
