The Westbrook High boys swim team had some tremendous swims on Tuesday, but even those efforts were not enough to overcome a strong Bangor team. The Rams won the Class A state championship with 307 points followed by the Blazes with 253, Scarborough at 241.5 and Cape at 233 in a meet held at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

Westbrook’s Matt Violette won the state title in the 500 freestyle finishing with a time of 5:00.53. Teammate Jacob Wilson was right behind in second place at 5:02.41.

The Blazes had a number of top finishes. Violette and Wilson took second and third respectively in the 200 freestyle. Derek Hawkes took fourth in the 200 individual medley race and sixth in the 500 free; Kyle Goan placed third in the 100 freestyle and seventh in the 100 breaststroke; and Keegan Goan finished eighth in the 100 backstroke.

Westbrook also did extremely well in the relay events where they placed second in the 400 freestyle and fourth in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

Bonny Eagle’s boys scored 31 points at Tuesday’s meet with Corey McGreth taking seventh in the 100 backstroke and eighth in the 50 free.

Westbrook’s girls scored 38 points in Monday’s Class A girls state championship at Bowdoin. Bangor also won that team title with 352 points.

The Blazes top finishes came from Kelly Smith (12th in the 50 free, 12th in the 100 butterfly and 12th in the 100 freestyle), Stephanie Lamson (16th in the 100 back), and Leah Grabarz (16th in the 100 breaststroke).

The Bonny Eagle girls scored 47 points on Monday. The Scots’ Hannah Branch took third in the 100 freestyle.
