Deering 21
Windham 14
In front of a home crowd ready to welcome the start of the football season, the Windham Eagles dropped a close 21-14 decision to Deering to start the season 0-1.
Windham, which was coming off an impressive preseason win over Massabesic, jumped out to an early lead in the game, but was unable to hold on as the Rams scored a touchdown in each of the final three quarters to pull out the win.
The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead thanks to a drive that was capped by a three-yard touchdown run by Jackson Taylor with under four minutes remaining in the first quarter.
As the second quarter began, the Eagles fought to preserve their lead, including a defensive stand where Windham stopped Deering on a fourth down play from the Eagles’ 15.
But Deering finally evened the score thanks to running back Jack Heary, who broke through with the first of his three touchdowns, scoring on a seven-yard burst with just over 1:30 to go before halftime. Heary gave the Rams the lead late in the third quarter when he scored from five yards out with just over 2:30 to go.
Heary gave the Rams an insurance touchdown when he grabbed a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jamie Ross with under two minutes to go in the game.
But Windham refused to go down without a fight, and ran off a long drive that was capped by an eight-yard touchdown run from Jack Mallis, and the score was 21-14.
The Eagles got the ball back for one last gasp, but were unable to complete a pass and Deering held on for the 21-14 win.
This Friday night, the Eagles travel to Bonny Eagle to take on the defending Class A state champion Scots in a 7 p.m. game. On Sept. 6, the Scots opened up their title defense with an impressive 46-6 road win over Cheverus.
