Post 197 aids hurricane victims

Westbrook Memorial Post 197 of the American Legion held a fundraiser on Oct. 9 to raise money for the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

“The legion post, auxiliary unit and Sons of the Legion Squadron teamed up and put on the afternoon event. It was a fun afternoon with some great country music,” said Dave Martin, commander of Post 197. “And with ticket sales, raffles and food sales from the kitchen we’ll be sending a check for $1600.00 to help in this recovery effort.”

Slim Andrews and the Cumberland Valley Boys and Gloria Jean and The E-Z Riders along with Bobby Le and the Kountry Knights provided the music for the event.

“These bands are regulars at the post for the Saturday night dances and literally jump at the chance to volunteer whenever we have events like this going on,” Martin said. “They’re a great bunch of very talented people and we’re fortunate to be associated with them.”

The kitchen team was headed up by Beverly Preston, Unit 197 president, with Dayle Pennell and Pat Hinckley pitching in; Carole Ann Huntington, Rose Manchester and Nancy Dacar sold raffle tickets.

“We’ve done quite a few of these benefits over the years but usually they have been for individuals or families.” Martin said. “I think this is the first one we’ve done for something of this magnitude. The money raised will be sent to The Department of Maine who will in turn forward it to Legion Headquarters in Minneapolis where every dollar will go into the National Emergency Fund, earmarked expressly for the hurricane Katrina and Rita relief effort. We don’t need to be reminded of the devastation down there and the cost is going to be unfathomable. This is one of those situations where each and every dollar will have a significant impact on someone’s life.”

Dave Martin, commander of Post 197, announces the total that the post raised for hurricane relief.
