Knights of Columbus 1

The Scarborough Little League 2009 season opened up at Peterson Field on May 1, with a rematch of the 2008 championship game as the Royals faced off against the Knights of Columbus.

The Royals got revenge on last year’s champs with a 5-1 win. Matt Hartl pounded the first pitch he saw over the right-center field fence for the Royals and struck out 11 of the 13 batters he faced while on the mound. Jordan Luong was the closer, striking out five of the seven batters he faced in two innings of work while also scoring a run for the Royals.

Cam Thayer was solid at catcher for the winners while crushing a ground rule double and scoring a run and Charlie Gardner knocked in a run with a base hit in his only official at bat.

Cornerstone 4

Michaud Distributors defeated Cornerstone 5 – 4 in 7 innings on Friday May 8th at Peterson Field. Matthew Aceto pitched 4.2 innings for Michaud, recording nine strikeouts while walking four batters and giving up two hits.

Austin Hancock took the mound in relief and recorded four strikeouts and walked one batter. Matt Caron pitched a strong five-plus innings for Cornerstone, helping to keep the game close and send it to extra innings.

Anthony Simoneau helped Cornerstone take a 3 – 2 lead in the fourth inning with a three-run home run. Juan German had a triple in the fifth inning for Michaud and later scored to put Michaud ahead 4 – 3. After Cornerstone tied it up in the sixth inning, Aceto scored the winning run from third base on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning.

On May 8, the Royals defeated the Lions 6-4 behind the strong pitching of Sam Ware and Jack Coutts. Ware struck out six in three innings of work and allowed only one run.

Coutts, a 10-year-old rookie, battled through his teammates’ shaky defense while striking out five in his three innings of work on the mound to close out the game for the Royals.

Joe Casale and Will Harmon led the Royals offensively. Casale went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Harmon went 1 for 2 with two RBIs for the victorious Royals.

Michaud Distributors 2

The Royals came from behind on May 9 with two runs in the sixth inning to defeat a courageous Michaud Distributors team 3-2.

Jamie Sproull played solid defense for the Royals to help his team to victory. Dan Hinrichs made solid contact at the plate driving in a run with a single. Ian Michelson laid down a perfect bunt base hit and scored the Royals’ first run, sparking his team.

Colby Whitaker stepped up for his team and closed the game to pick up the save in his first appearance on the mound.
