The Westbrook American reported in its issue of Wednesday, Feb. 8, 1956, that Georgia L. Berry announced her candidacy for the Board of Selectmen. She became the first woman ever in Gorham to seek the post. Her husband, Lt. Cmdr. William R. Berry, USN (ret), was a former selectman.

Also, Richard Huff, 28, was seeking re-election as town clerk, treasurer and tax collector.
