Falcons compete in season’s first wrestling meet

Wescott Junior High School sent 14 wrestlers to the Massabesic Middle School Invitational in Waterboro Saturday. Preston Peabbles, Harrison Stondak and Andrew Drouin each earned first-place medals, while Glenn Emery and Steve Sawyer were runners-up. In addition, Matt MacDowell took third and Craig Dibiase placed fourth. Overall, 12 wrestlers had wins for the Falcons, including Graham Strondak, Terry Webber, Kyle Kirkpatrick and Dustin Allen, who were all competing in the first tournament of their careers. Wescott’s next home meet is Thursday at 4:00 p.m. against rival Bonny Eagle at Westbrook High School.

Hoop tourney comes to town

The 14th annual Paper City Classic, a basketball tournament for fifth and sixth grade girls, will be held March 21-26 at Westbrook High School and Wescott Middle School. Teams from throughout southern Maine will be playing in the double elimination tournament, and medals, ribbons and T-shirts will be distributed to the players. The host team from Westbrook starts off the competition when they meet Bonny Eagle at the middle school Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. Gorham will tip off Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Falmouth. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for those under 18 and is valid for all games on that day.

Local athletes to compete in Maine Games

The 2006 Maine Games kick off with a powerlifting competition at the Brewer Auditorium on March 25 and 26. From there, various events will be held with increasing regularity through the spring and summer. Those include bowling (May 6 in Waterville), indoor karting (May 6 in Scarborough), baton twirling and adult flag football (May 13 in Waterville), fencing and handball (June 17 in Saco), track and field (June 24 in Westbrook), wrestling (June 24 and 25 in Gorham), swimming (June 25 in Bath), TurboJav throwing (Aug. 19 in Old Orchard Beach), triathlon (Aug. 20 in Brewer). The Maine Games wrap up with the Saco Bay 5K and 10K race on Sept. 10. Registrations for most Maine Games events will begin on April 1, with online and mail-in registrations being accepted this year. Check the website, www.mainegames.org, for complete registration details for each specific event. Medalists qualify for the 2007 State Games of America, held in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Little League and Babe Ruth registration

Registration in Westbrook for both Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball will be held in the cafeteria of Wescott Junior High School on Friday, March 17, from 5:00-8:00 p.m., and Saturday, March 18, from 9 a.m. to noon. Players must provide birth certificates at the time of registration. Little League registration forms are available in Westbrook schools.
