In a surprise to many in Westbrook, the Portland School Committee is scheduled to vote this evening (June 14) on the appointment of Gary Groves as Deering High School’s athletic director.

Groves, 43, took over as AD at Westbrook High School less than a year ago, returning to his alma mater and a place that held memories of his youth as a talented three-sport athlete.

At the time he was excited about the move, even resigning his seat on the Westbrook City Council to avoid any conflict of interest.

Groves, who was the Portland High School AD for five years before coming to Westbrook, will replace Scott Shibles, who is leaving Deering after 10 years.
