FREEPORT – Donations for fuel and food surpassed expectations during the 10th annual Freeze Out, held last weekend by Freeport Community Services.
Susan Mack, family service coordinator for Freeport Community Services, said Monday that she had no final figures yet. But, Mack said, she believes more than the goal of $15,000 for fuel assistance and more than 2,000 pounds of food for the FCS food pantry were collected.
Mack and others stayed outside First Parish Church Congregational in Freeport for 24 hours -– from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday -– in a brave gesture to collect money for fuel and good. People made pledges and many stopped by and dropped off money.
Mack, her son Jamie Rodel, and Patty Bruce, another Freeze Out veteran, managed to stay out all night in the snow.
“We got to wave to the snow plow people in the middle of the night,” Mack said.
Mack credited local Boy Scouts for bringing food to the food pantry, sorting shelves and stocking them, which she said were at the lowest point in some time.
The Rotary Club led the food drive, and picked much of it up at Shaw’s, she said.
