Historical dedication

The Buxton-Hollis Historical Society will dedicate memorial plantings and new landscaping at the Elden Store at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, as part of an extensive project to repair and preserve the building, corner of Route 22 and Haines Meadow Road.

Elden Store, also known as the Hanson Coat Factory, has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places. The Buxton-Hollis Historical Society, Narragansett Number One Foundation, the town of Buxton and many volunteers and private donors have worked together to showcase this building that was once a hub of Buxton’s commercial district.

Immediately following the dedication at Elden Store, the group will cross the road to dedicate a new sign in the style of a historic marker at the N.C. Watson one-room school. This school was originally located in Chicopee village and had fallen into disuse and needed considerable repair.

Largely because of the leadership of Lou Emery, the school was moved to the corner of Groveville Road and Long Plains Road to a plot of land donated by Anthony Taylor. Taylor and the N.C. Watson School Committee also designed the new sign, which was funded by private and public donations. The school will be open during this occasion.

Buxton awarded fire grant

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree recently announced that three Maine fire departments – Buxton, Bath and Westport Island – will receive a total of $456,989 in funding through the federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant program to replace outdated and failing safety equipment.

Buxton Fire Department will receive $238,435 to replace sets of breathing apparatus that are approaching 40 years old.

“Every day, Maine firefighters put their lives on the line to protect public safety, but too many have to do so with failing protective gear that can be decades old. Many communities simply can’t afford to replace it,” said Pingree. “The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program is critical in helping departments get the gear they need to protect firefighter and public safety when local budgets fall short

‘Villian: DeBlanks’ at Saco River Theatre

Saco River Theatre presents the comedy, “Villain: DeBlanks,” at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 29 Salmon Falls Road in Bar Mills.

The fill-in-the-blanks whodunit was written by Billy Mitchell.

“The audience provides nouns, adjectives, and verbs (the wilder, the better), and the actors provide the laughs – uncensored and unrehearsed – as they enact the story of Philip DeBlanks’ untimely demise,” a theater announcement said. “It’s Clue meets adult Mad Libs, performed by some of the funniest people in southern Maine. Like a ride to summer camp in the back of a station wagon, this one-night-only performance will be ridiculously one-of-a-kind.”

The cast includes Lowell Jeffers, Francesca Jellison, William McDonough III, Dana Packard, Jennifer Porter and Molly Bryant Roberts.

The show is a co-benefit for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine and Saco River Theatre. Tickets are $20. Call 929-5412. For more information, visit VillainDeBlanks.com.
