Shane Bernier likes to ski. He’s been hitting the slopes since he was 2-years-old, and he hasn’t been slowed by the fact that Scarborough High School has no Alpine ski team.
Bernier, a Scarborough junior, trained and competed this season – as he has since his freshman year – with the ski team from Gray-New Gloucester High School.
After classes four days a week he went to Shawnee Peak in Bridgton to meet the team and coach Charlie O’Brien for practice.
“It’s kind of weird,” Bernier said of the arrangement. “It’s like going to two different schools.”
He says he’s tried to drum up more interest for a ski team among his Scarborough classmates, but so far it’s not working.
That’s fine by Bernier. He’ll keep skiing and keep improving. This year at the Class A state meet he finished 34th in the slalom and 36th in the giant slalom in a field of about 80 competitors.
