A Cumberland County Sheriff’s patrol deputy rear-ended a vehicle on Wednesday afternoon at 5:40 p.m. on Route 115 near Unity Gardens.
Deputy Jay Ward collided with a white sedan that had stopped in the roadway. The deputy was returning to his home in Windham when the accident occurred. Ward covers the Harpswell area for the department.
“Basically what happened was that the deputy was on his way home when a person stopped in the road. But he didn’t,” Capt. Bill Rhoads said.
Rhoads said both Ward and the driver of the other car were “pretty shook up,” but no one was taken to the hospital.
Windham police and Fire & Rescue responded to clean up the debris. Damage to the trooper’s car is estimated at $4,000 to $5,000. The driver of the sedan was treated on scene by Windham paramedics for whiplash.
Rhoads said the department will investigate the accident. Since it was a minor accident, no outside party will conduct the investigation. Instead, a superior will investigate and then report to an accident review board made up of six Sheriff’s department officials ranging from management to patrol officers.
