One of the questions you will be asked to vote on at the polls on
Tuesday, May 22, will be whether you want to keep the city clerk’s position an elected one or make it an appointed position. There has been very little discussion on this issue prior to it going on the ballot and those that support changing our city charter from an “elected” clerk to an appointed one have given little rationale for doing so.
Westbrook is a unique city in many ways, and one important tradition we have over other municipalities is that we “elect” our city clerk, along with our mayor and city council. Sometimes change is good, and sometimes leaving things as they are is the best course of action.
Please vote on May 22, and please vote “no” on the blue ballot and leave the city clerk’s position an elected one. This is your city; help ensure that a Westbrook resident is in this job, vote “no.”
