No one – not even those opposed to tar sands oil in South Portland – has maligned Portland Pipeline. All have acknowledged the company’s exemplary safety record to date and its contributions to our community. In addition to complaining about “attacks” on its reputation, Portland Pipeline also repeatedly declares that it has no plans to alter the flow or content of oil between Canada and South Portland. Yet it claims that the proposed Waterfront Protection Ordinance will cost its employees jobs and even put the company out of business.
The ordinance calls for business as usual for all existing waterfront enterprises. If the prospect of piping tar sands oil to South Portland for off-gassing and export represents a lifeline for Portland Pipeline, it may be time to rethink the business plan.
