Two large sporting events are taking place this weekend in Freeport that authorities say will impact local traffic.

On Saturday, Sept. 6, the annual Lobsterman Triathlon starts at 8:45 a.m. at Winslow Park in South Freeport, off Route 1. According to public safety officials, Staples Point Road will be closed at 8 a.m. to through traffic; only local traffic will be allowed. South Freeport Road will be closed at some point during the race. If you need to access the Town Wharf or the South Freeport Post Office, use Pine Street. The race is expected to be completed by 2:45 p.m.

On Sunday, Sept. 7, the Freeport Half Marathon starts at 9 a.m. and the 5K will start at 9:15 a.m. Both races start and end at Freeport USA “Hose Tower” on Depot Street. There will be no road closures but motorists are urged to be aware of runners on the side of the roadway. The race is expected to be completed by noon.

Police officers will be posted at all major intersections during the events.
