Woodland Road resident Kay Doucette won first prize in the Scarborough Garden Club’s Green Thumb Award contest recognizing the town’s best gardens.
The selection came as a surprise to Doucette, who is not a member of the club.
“I’m very flattered that we won,” Doucette said.
Doucette has been gardening her whole life although as a youth she did not like it too much. But once she reached to adulthood she began planting her own gardens and has developed a passion for the hobby.
The gardens at her home were started about seven years ago after her husband Russ completed some major renovation work to their home that required removing all of the landscaping.
This allowed her to start from scratch and plant some of her favorite trees, bushes and flowers, including day lilies, daisies and irises. She also plants some annuals around the yard to help keep year-round color.
“I love gardening,” she said. “I do it because I love looking at the flowers.”
Doucette enjoys having a natural garden and when trimming and pruning her garden tries to make things look as natural as possible. Russ keeps the couple’s lawn looking as vibrant as the flower gardens.
Like most gardeners, Doucette can be found outside almost every day doing something to her plants. She figures that by working a little bit every day she can easily keep up with maintenance, rather than letting it go and then doing everything at once.
“If you keep up with it, it’s not that overwhelming,” she said.
Frank Cardamone, of 12 Lillian Way, won second place in the contest. Noel Ryan, of 8 Lillian Way, and Donna Rubin, of 39 Kirkwood Road, were tied for third place.
