Michael Connolly, the athletic director at Portland High School, will take the recently vacated job in Westbrook, pending Westbrook School Committee approval next week.
Superintendent of Schools Marc Gousse said Wednesday that the nomination of Connolly for the job is “exciting” for Westbrook. He called Connolly “highly respected.”
“Certainly, we feel very fortunate to have him join us in Westbrook,” he added. “He’s a very bright and engaging guy.”
Marc Sawyer, the former athletic director in Westbrook, announced his resignation in April following months of controversy stemming from student drinking and the lifting of suspensions. In his resignation letter, Sawyer cited the “incestuous culture” of the community.
Gousse, who said Connolly was a Westbrook resident, said the department received an “outstanding pool” of about 20 applicants for the position. Connolly was hired for the Portland job in 2012.
Gousse said the Westbrook School Committee will vote to approve Connolly next Wednesday, June 11.
