Police will be seeking indictments in connection with a series of car fires on Brown Street two weeks ago.

Police Chief Paul McCarthy said police expect to go to the grand jury in November seeking indictments. He declined to name the suspects in the case. McCarthy said police do not anticipate making any arrests in the case until after the grand jury hands down the indictments.

One man has already been arrested in connection with the investigation, though he has not yet been charged with the fires. McCarthy said David Reali, 18, who is originally from Vassalboro, but had been most recently living on Brown Street, was arrested last week and charged with receiving stolen property. He said he anticipates Reali would be facing additional charges after the grand jury hears the case.

Westbrook Police Detective Sgt. Stephen Lyons said six cars were burned on Sept. 28 and 29. The cars were burned at locations on Brown, Myrtle, Lowell and Lugrin streets. Most of the fires occurred between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m.

Police said five of the six cars, all of which were unlocked, were parked on the street. The sixth car was parked in a driveway on Brown Street. Police are withholding how the fires were started as a part of the investigation.

Anyone with any information about the fires should contact the police department at 854-0644.
