Westbrook firefighters spent Friday night at the Wal-Mart in Windham, buying toys for Westbrook children in need.

The shopping trip was part of the annual Westbrook Toys for Kids effort.

Ten firefighters, along with Chief Gary Littlefield and his wife, shopped for 40 families with children ranging in age from 1 to 14 years of age.

The Westbrook Fire Department spent $2,500 on the toys, with an added gift card from Wal-Mart for $100. Toys varied from games to dolls for younger children and radios and Legos for older children.

“All of us had a great time shopping, knowing that we were going to be making Christmas memorable and special for so many children,” said Capt. Rick Dorr. “It’s is an event that we look forward to every year. It makes us all wish that we were kids again.”

The Westbrook firefighters will be distributing the toys to the families this Saturday.
