Winslow 6
Cape Elizabeth 3
The Cape Elizabeth High School ice hockey team fell to undefeated Winslow, 6-3, Saturday at the Portland Ice Arena.
The Black Raiders scored three goals off Cape turnovers.
“It’s tough,” Cape Elizabeth coach Jason Tremblay said. “We are still making key mistakes here and there. We lost the puck three times at the point. That’s what is killing us right now.”
Two of Winslow’s final three goals came while shorthanded.
Despite the loss and a 1-5 record, Tremblay sees hope for the Capers.
“Five-on-five tonight we played very well,” he said. “That’s a drastic difference from the last two games where we felt like we were outplayed by both teams. Yesterday we did a good job at practice and now I think we are going to turn it around.”
Winslow got on the board first when Ben Grant scored on a one-timer. The Capers answered with seconds remaining in the first period. Sean Eubanks scored on a breakaway, bringing the puck to his forehand and sending a wrist shot past Winslow goalie Ryan Cormier.
Mark Foner stuffed in a rebound early in the second period, putting the Capers ahead, 2-1. Unfortunately, the lead wouldn’t last. Winslow scored three goals over the period’s final 3 minutes 37 seconds, taking a 4-2 lead into the final frame.
There, the Black Raiders added two more, one an empty-netter after Cape pulled its goalie for an extra advantage at the offensive add.
“It’s that tough a stretch for us,” Tremblay said,” and it doesn’t get any easier.”
After playing in the Maine High School Hockey Invitational, Cape continues regular season play on Jan. 4 against York.
