Bonny Eagle 18
Windham 6
The Bonny Eagle girls’ lacrosse team got goals from seven different players in an 18-6 win over Windham on Tuesday. Kate Boyer and Jordyn Noyes paced the Bonny Eagle offensive attack with four goals apiece. Jessica Irish and Sam Gifford both scored two goals for Windham.
“I know that all the kids on the team can score,” Bonny Eagle coach Judy Martin said of the offense. “I think they think that only certain ones can score and I know they all can score. Going into the last tough game at the end of the season, it will be nice to have confidence in all the players.”
The Scots didn’t waste any time getting on the board. Boyer scored her first goal of the game just 31 seconds after the opening draw. Stephanie Lombardo scored a couple minutes later to give Bonny Eagle a 2-0 lead. Lombardo finished the game with three goals.
Becky King scored the third Bonny Eagle goal with 17:50 to go in the first half. She ran past the front of the goal and scored on a backhander. Boyer recorded her second goal of the game just 43 seconds later on a breakaway. Another 32 seconds past and the Scots got another goal from King for a fast 5-0 lead.
The Eagles got on the board with 14:19 to play in the half when Gifford broke through with her first goal of the game. That got the Eagles rolling a bit. Noyes tallied her first goal shortly after for a 6-1 Scots lead. Carly Grondin then scored for Windham to cut the deficit to four.
Boyer and Noyes scored about a minute apart and the Scots lead was up to six goals. But the Eagles came back and scored two straight. Gifford scored with 4:24 to go and Irish with 3:03 to play in the first half. Noyes got the last goal of the first half with 25.3 seconds left and the Scots took a 9-4 lead into halftime.
“They were passing awesome; that was a big part of the game today,” Martin said. “They were just riding them defensively as well making them turn the ball over. Of course seven different people scored the goals. They spread the wealth and that was nice. Passing with the whole field offensively and the transition were probably the keys to the game.”
The Eagles scored the first goal of the second half when Irish crashed the net and beat Bonny Eagle goalie Lindsay Bradeen for her second goal of the game.
Any thoughts of a Windham comeback were squashed over the rest of the half as the Scots ripped off nine straight goals. Lombardo scored the first with 23:11 to go in the game. Monica Amabile scored with 16:16 to go. That goal triggered a series of quick goals. Boyer got her fourth with 15:56 to go. King finished her hat trick just 16 seconds later. With 14:22 to go Alyssa Severance scored to make it 15-5 Bonny Eagle. Lombardo finished her hat trick with 12:34 remaining. Noyes tallied her fourth goal with 8:09 left. Janessa Plummer scored the final two Bonny Eagle goals to make it an 18-5 game.
Kirsten Lowell scored the final goal for the Eagles with 12.9 seconds left.
The Eagles fell to 0-10 with the loss while the Scots improved to 5-5. Martin says a game like this will help build the team’s confidence for tougher games like the one coming up on Monday against Kennebunk.
“We’re ready for them,” she said. “We can play them we’ve played with everybody. Even the games we lost we have played right with the teams. We can play with Kennebunk. It will just be a matter of intensity for the entire game. It can’t be in spurts, it has to be for the entire game, but we can play with them.”
