A Community Blood Drive will be held on Monday, May 23, in the Pond Cove Gym, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Individuals in good health, 17 years and over, who weigh at least 110 pounds and have no history of exposure to hepatitis, may be eligible to donate. There is no upper age limit for donors, and most medications are acceptable.

Before blood is donated, a Red Cross clinician will review the donor’s health history, measure the amount of iron in their blood, and check their blood pressure, pulse and temperature.

The entire donation process, registration to relaxing at the canteen, takes approximately one hour. Walk-ins will be accommodated at the blood drive, however making an appointment will minimize the waiting. Please call the nurse’s office at 799-7339.

The need for blood in southern Maine is unending. The responsibility of maintaining the blood supplies lies with healthy, eligible community members. Help to sustain the life of a trauma victim, a patient with heart disease, hemophilia or cancer by donating blood and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same. One unit of blood can help at least two or more patients. The blood donated will be separated into components-red blood cells, plasma and platelets. Each component plays an integral role in patient care.

High school students are assisting in planning this blood drive and will be participating that day. If you have a son or daughter, please encourage their participation. Please mark your calendars and help spread the word. Thank you for your support.
