“It is a major honor to receive the Sara Brown trophy,” said Bailey, a student at the University of Southern Maine.

The annual award is named for Sara Brown, who died in a car accident when she was just 17 years old. Brown, an A student at Bonny Eagle High School, was a horse lover who had been a regular at Kent’s Stable since she was 9 years old.

Bailey has been at the stable since she was 10 years old and has been teaching and working there for five or six years. She owns a 9-year old thoroughbred, Nicholas. She said the people at Kent’s Stable have been like a second family for her. “Kent’s Stable will always mean so much to me,” she said.

She said the “well-educated” horses of Lisa Kent, a teacher at the stable, were “Rolls-Royces.” Bailey also works for at a dog grooming business, Just Fur Friends, in Gorham.

Katie Marshall, also a student at the University of Southern Maine, won the award in 2002. Marshall, a Bonny Eagle High School graduate, is a teacher at Kent’s Stable and she has worked at Kent’s Stable since she was 14 years old and has been riding since 9 years old. Marshall has a 6-year-old thoroughbred named Sterling.

Marshall thanked her parents and Lisa Kent and for the opportunities to ride and show horses. “Without those three people, I would not be where I am today,” Marshall said.

Anna Jorgensen, 15, of Cape Elizabeth, won the Brown trophy in 2004. She has been riding since she was eight or nine years old and it has been a “huge” part of her life, she said.

Jorgensen said she especially enjoys riding a thoroughbred/paint mare named Beamer. She plays soccer and lacrosse at Cape Elizabeth High School. She said the Sara Brown award has been an inspiration. “I’m very proud to have my name on the trophy dedicated to her along with other great riders as well,” Jorgensen said.
